Powering Offshore Operations with Renewable Solar Power

JCE designed a bespoke modular solar power solution to meet the energy needs of an unmanned oil rig in Norway’s harsh offshore environment. The system, constructed for seamless integration and year-round operation, ensures reliable power and enhances safety. This project highlights JCE’s commitment to innovative renewable energy solutions for the oil and gas sector.

The client faced the complex challenge of powering an unmanned oil production rig destined for operation in the harsh offshore environment of Norway. The main issues included ensuring continuous energy supply throughout the year, accommodating the power system within limited space on the rig, and minimising the disruption to the construction and operation of the oil platform.

JCE responded by designing a bespoke modular renewable energy solution tailored for the specific needs of the project. The Solar Power Package, ATEX/IECEx certified and designed to confrom with NORSOK standards, was developed to be installed separately from the main oil platform construction, allowing flexibility and efficiency in the building process. This system was constructed at a dry dock and designed for easy integration once the platform was complete.

Key features of our solution included:

• Optimised Space Utilisation: The solar panels were strategically arranged along the perimeter of the platform, angled to capture maximum sunlight throughout the day. With an innovative over the handrail concept used, this in turn, did not compromise deck space but providing the power required.
• Year-Round Operation: Engineered to operate 24/7, 365 days a year, our system is built to withstand the challenging North Sea weather conditions. It includes features that allow the panels to recharge even during the minimal daylight hours of December.
• Compact and Efficient Design: A container unit within the Solar Power Package houses all necessary controllers, PLCs, and batteries. This unit was fully assembled and pre-wired in our Aberdeen workshop, ensuring rapid and efficient installation on the platform.

Calculations based on comparisons with a standalone 1kw diesel generator revealed significant operational and environmental savings over one year:

• OPEX Costs Saved: Over £50,000
• Fuel Saved: Approximately 9,000 litres
• Man Hours Saved: Reduced from 552 to 114
• CO2 Emissions Reduced: 20,350 kg

The implementation of the Solar Power Package has allowed the client to proceed with the construction and operation of the unmanned oil rig with an independent and reliable power source.

The solar energy system will not only support the essential operational loads such as well monitoring and remote communication, but will enhance the safety of the installation by ensuring it remains visible from any vessel offshore with the integrated Navaids.
